A minimum of thirteen people killed and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
